About

Sharanjit Sandhu has been teaching Iyengar based Hatha Yoga classes throughout the San Francisco Bay Area since 1997.  She graduated from Rodney Yee’s reputable and immersive Piedmont Yoga Studio’s 2-year, 640-hr, Teacher Training Program in 1998.

It was a running injury, in 1996, that reluctantly brought her to her first few yoga classes where she soon realized her body needed more muscle balance, her mind more calm and her breath deeper breathing.

The time spent in yoga reignited her childhood passion in Bharatanatyam, Indian Classical Dance, where she then began studies in another style of Indian Classical Dance, Odissi Dance, with the renowned and exquisite Bay Area dancer and teacher Asako Takami.

Enjoying the dynamic and expressive movements of Indian Classical Dance and it’s deep relation to yoga, Sharanjit soon began studies in another “Yoga-Art-Science” that of Indian Martial Arts, Kalarippayattu, in Chavakkad, Kerala, India in 2000 and 2003, and where she also studied Tantra Yoga in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, India in 2000.

Kalarippayattu, considered the mother of all Martial Art forms, consisted of kicking exercises and a flowing sequence of animal postures and in Tantra Yoga she studied the power of the energetic body and chakras.

It was only through yoga and deep introspection (and later confirmation from a Neurologist) that Sharanjit came to realize that her right side was weaker, smaller and tighter due to a childhood brain injury, Chicken Pox Encephalitis, which finally explained a lot of the difficulty she was experiencing and had experienced since she was a child. Once gaining this knowledge she was then able to work with her body and mind in yet another layer towards deeper healing.  As a result of Sharanjit’s own journey she has gained a special ability and sensitivity in working with those who have their own injuries and/or limitations. Thus Sharanjit teaches a therapeutic style of yoga based on BKS Iyengar’s intelligence with the use of props; for alignment, length, strength and support, along with restorative postures and meditation.

She also integrates knowledge from her dance and martial arts teachings along with her own healing experiences of osteopathy, physical therapy, acupuncture, healing foods/nutrition, ayurveda, sound healing, clairvoyance, and shamanism into her teachings.

Sharanjit graduated with a B.A. in Exercise Science and a Minor in Art History from the University of California at Davis in 1992.

Sharanjit’s classes are a chiropractic experience for both the mind and body. You will learn to listen to and self align your body. Walk without pain.
